Highways Minister calls for report on disaster-prone roads

Chief Government Whip and Highways Minister Johnston Fernando yesterday (18) called for an immediate report on roads and highways prone to earth slips and landslides. He instructed Secretary to the Ministry of Highways R.W.R. Pemasiri and Road Development Authority (RDA) Chairman Chaminda Athaluwage to submit a comprehensive report on the roads and highways in areas countrywide vulnerable to landslides. “These roads and highways have been constructed years ago, but so far no study has been made on roads and highways prone to landslides,” the Minister said. He said that had issued instructions to obtain the services of the experts and officials in the RDA and National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) to conduct an immediate study on threat assessment to the roads from landslides and to submit a report soon.
