Hirunika Premachandra, Rehan Jayawickrema and 8 others have been arrested by the police for protesting outside the President's residence a short while ago, it is learnt.
Speaking to The Morning while inside the Harbour Police station, Arrestee Rehan Jayawickreme said that the police were mishandling Premachandra and had even confiscated her phone while being transported in the police bus.
"We had only been protesting at the entrance asking for 5 minutes of the President's time. We then jumped the barricades and just then, the police came with a whole bunch of officers and arrested the 7 of us. We were piled into a bus and Hirunika was even carried into the bus by police officers forcefully. We kept telling them to stop being violent, but they were so rough with her. While in the bus, the police grabbed her phone forcefully and now we are seated at the Harbour police station," said Jayawickrema.
