HRCSL Chairperson steps down: New name nominated to chair HRCSL

By Asiri Fernando The Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) Dr. Jagath Balasuriya has stepped down from his post at the Commission, The Sunday Morning reliably learnt. Responding to a query by The Sunday Morning, HRCSL Commissioner Dr. M.H. Nimal Karunasiri confirmed that Dr. Balasuriya had stepped down from his post last week. According to Dr. Karunasiri, Dr. Balasuriya’s resignation came due to health concerns. The Sunday Morning understands that a name for the Chairperson post has been nominated and will likely be submitted to the Constitutional Committee for approval this week. It is learnt that a new commissioner is also to be appointed to the HRCSL. A senior government minister told The Sunday Morning that a legal professional will likely be appointed to the HRCSL following the Chairperson’s resignation. Dr. Balasuriya was appointed as the Chairperson of the HRCSL in December 2020 by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
