09 Nov 2021

BY Buddhika Samaraweera  Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chandana D. Wickramaratne has given necessary instructions to all police officials to prevent incidents such as attacks on police officers by members of the public, according to the Public Security Ministry.  There have been a number of incidents of attacks on police officers who have gone to certain areas for raids and to arrest suspects, by the public, in the recent past.  Accordingly, when contacted by The Morning to query as to whether the Public Security Ministry or the Police Department has formulated any plan to prevent such incidents, Public Security Ministry Secretary Maj. Gen. (Retd.) Jagath Alwis said that IGP Wickramaratne has given necessary instructions to all police officers to prevent such incidents.  Claiming that the police officers are aware of the areas where people generally behave in a somewhat violent manner, Alwis said that police stations have been instructed to send a strong contingent of police officers when leaving for raids in such areas.  “Only a couple of such cases have been reported and the Police have already taken necessary steps to prevent such. Even though the people behave in a violent manner, the Police should go and carry out their duty. However, police stations have now been instructed to send a strong police force when carrying out raids in areas where the people usually behave in a slightly violent manner,” he added.
