Imported chemical fertiliser not for local agricultural use: PMD

04 Aug 2021

Following the recent proposal made by the Minister of Agriculture to import Chelated Mineral and Micro Nutrients for the purpose of fertilisation, the President’s Media Division (PMD) stated today that such imports will only be allowed through a specialized license programme. With respect to Gazette Notification No. 2226/48 which prohibits the importation of Chelated Mineral and Micro Nutrients, the PMD stated that it was amended in order to enforce the Agriculture Minister’s proposal. Accordingly, only certain institutions will be allowed to import the same under this programme, based on the individual requirements. Further to this, it was clarified that the import of chemical fertilizer will not be granted for local agriculture. This is in line with the President’s firm decision to only use organic fertilizer for local agriculture. The PMD also noted that this decision will not be reversed in the future.
