India vs. Sri Lanka first Test on Friday: Can Sri Lanka turnaround history?

01 Mar 2022

India vs. Sri Lanka Test Record
  • India and Sri Lanka have played 44 Tests overall. 20 won by India and only seven by Sri Lanka, 17 Tests have ended in a draw

  • India has never lost to Sri Lanka at home. Out of 20 Tests against Sri Lanka at home, India has won 11 while nine have ended in a draw
  • The last win for Sri Lanka was seven years ago in Galle in August 2015
  • The latest two-match Test series between the two countries will commence on Friday (4) at Mohali while second Test will be played at Bengaluru from Saturday (12) under lights with a pink ball
Sri Lanka has never beaten India, in India, in a Test match in 20 previous attempts. Not only this, but the Lankan team has not won a Test against India in the last seven years. But Sri Lankan skipper Dimuth Karunaratne had believed history could change in Mohali and Bengaluru this time. “We want to win a Test match in India which is our main aim during these two Test match series, so far Sri Lanka has not won a Test match in India so we are really focused on that. I think we have a team to beat India,” Karunaratne had been quoted as saying in the Indo media yesterday (1). Meanwhile the Sri Lankan Test squad had arrived at Chandigarh yesterday. Sri Lanka were arriving there after getting whitewashed in the preceding Twenty20 International (T20I) series by a 3-0. Mohali, officially known as Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, is a planned city in the Mohali district in Punjab, India, which is a commercial hub lying South-west of Chandigarh. Numerous factors will make this series special, as former India Captain Virat Kohli will be playing his 1,000th Test in Mohali, whereas Rohit Sharma’s India will be eyeing the No. 1 spot in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s Test rankings. Sri Lanka last played red-ball cricket three months ago when they registered a 2-0 clean sweep against the West Indies at home.
