Intelligence operatives film farmers' protest in Galle: Manusha Nanayakkara

22 Oct 2021

Intelligence operatives were present at a protest by farmers demanding fertilizer in Hiniduma, Galle, Smagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Manusha Nanayakkara claimed. He added that the intelligence operatives fled when farmers attempted to talk to them. A significant number of farmers in Galle are tea small holders, the MP said. A common complaint of the farmers is that the tea bushes are yellowing because they have no fertilizer. The MP said that the President believed that running the country was as easy as the beautification of Colombo. "Now the President claims that he has no experience in governing the country. We warned the people of this," he said. Nanayakkara also pointed out some individuals who were recording the protest and alleged that they were intelligence operatives. "Why are you recording? Who are you going to show this to?" "We are in deep trouble. We survived because of the income from tea. We can't maintain tea plantations with organic fertilizer. We can't even afford basic provisions now," a farmer said. The protestors claimed that most of them had voted for the SLPP. They also burnt effigies of Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage and Bandula Gunawardane.
