JVP files writ application against Yugadanavi deal

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) filed a writ application before the Colombo Court of Appeal today (26) requesting to annul the decision by the Cabinet Ministers to transfer 40% of the shares of the Yugadanavi Power plant in Kerawalapitiya to New Fortress Energy Inc. 43 respondents were named in total, with the inclusion of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Minister of Finance Basil Rajapaksa, Foreign Minister G L Peiris, The Monetary Board of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation . The application was for a writ of mandamus be made on the respondents preventing them from taking any actions with regard to the matter until the application is taken up and its investigation is concluded. Earlier last week, The Samagi Jana Balawegaya filed a Fundamental Rights application with the Supreme Court, challenging the Governments decision to transfer 40% of the Kerawalapitiya Power Plant to a US firm, and later His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith and Venerable Elle Gunawansa Thero also filed a Fundamental Rights Application with the Supreme Court seeking an order to prevent the transfers of shares of the Yugadanavi Power Plant to New Fortress Energy Inc.
