JVP, FSP suspect terror threat to be fake news, ‘scripted’

05 Jul 2022

Commenting on the letter sent by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to the Defence Secretary regarding a purported planned terrorist attack today (5) and tomorrow (6), Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP)-led National People’s Power (NPP) Leader MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake voiced his suspicions as to whether the Government was spreading false information while the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) labelled the letter a “script”. Speaking at a media briefing held yesterday (4), Dissanayake, who presented the letter addressed to Defence Ministry Secretary Gen. Kamal Gunaratne by IGP Chandana D. Wickramaratne, pertaining to reports of a planned attack today and tomorrow, said that the Government should reveal how such information was obtained and provide further details into the alleged planned attacks. “But there is a serious doubt as to whether the Government is spreading false information about such an attack,” he added. Meanwhile, convening a media briefing yesterday, FSP Politburo Member Duminda Nagamuwa called the letter a part of a “script” and stated that reports on the Easter Sunday bombings were not given to Archbishop of Colombo His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, which shows that there is something that the Government is trying to hide.  “There is talk that the Easter Sunday attacks were a plot by this elected Government. So, the people who came to power with such plots will create any scheme in order to retain their power.” Pertaining to the second crucial point of the letter addressed to the Defence Secretary, which states that the JVP, FSP, and other Opposition groups are launching an attack on MPs and Provincial Councillors, Dissanayake whilst rejecting the allegation, said that it was an attempt to incite fear among the people.  “Our party rejects this letter which has linked us and other political parties of the Opposition. The people should not fall for these antics of the Government. The people’s protest cannot be suppressed by such naive measures implemented by the President and the IGP,” he said. Meanwhile, Nagamuwa, who also responded to the allegations, said: “This has happened in the past. They themselves put out the news that there is going to be an attack and they themselves attack, and then blame a certain party or an individual for it and arrest them, thus completing their script. There is going to be a large-scale uprising soon and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will have to step down. It is due to these protests that the Government is planning such things.  “The military and the Police are using violence at fuel stations. So, they are slowly acting according to the script. We have suspicions that they are targeting the FSP and planning some sort of suppression. We will not allow such suppression and ask the people to stand against it.”
