28 Jul 2022

  • 10,000 MT to be provided to fishermen who request subsidy extension beyond six months
  • Crude, fuel to be obtained from Russia; loan relief period for fishers under Cabinet consideration
Arrangements for the procurement of 10,000 metric tonnes (MTs) of kerosene from Singapore are being made in order to aid the fishing community who have been severely affected by the fuel crisis, a media release by the Ministry of Fisheries said. Following a discussion between Minister of Fisheries Douglas Devananda and the Joint Fishermen’s Union held at the Ministry on Tuesday (26), it had been said that the issue facing fishermen will be resolved within a week, as arrangements had been made to procure 10,000 MT of kerosene from Singapore, while discussions are also underway to obtain crude oil and fuel from Russia, and fuel through the Indian loan assistance. A total of 40 representatives from the Western and Northwestern fishing communities who were present at the discussion had informed Devananda that their livelihoods had been severely affected, as they are unable to go to sea for the past one and a half months. Therefore, they requested the Minister to extend the current kerosene subsidy for six months or more. The statement further said that the Minister had informed union representatives that he would draw the attention of the Cabinet of Ministers to provide a subsidy to the fishermen who had lost their jobs for two and a half months and to provide a loan repayment related relief period to the fishermen who are caught up in bank-related debt.
