Kuliyapitiya business building now gang violence hotspot

By Dinitha Rathnayake Kuliyapitiya Police stated that they have been receiving information pertaining to students who have behaved inappropriately in a business building called the “Gama” shopping complex situated in the heart of the Kuliyapitiya town, and also said there are complaints related to sexual harassment taking place in said location that have now resulted in court proceedings. According to the Police, complaints have been received on a daily basis about this place, which has been turned into a hotspot for gang violence. “It is the responsibility of the businessmen to evacuate the people who are unnecessarily remaining within the premises, due to the risk of getting involved in such incidents.” Municipal Public Health Inspector Sanjay Vanninayake also said that empty beer cans and bottles have been found strewn about the premises, and stated that this was because schoolchildren were consuming alcohol in the area while skipping tuition classes.  Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a 52-year-old man was killed in a stabbing incident inside the Nawagamuwa Police Station. The Police said that the incident took place when a complaint was being investigated. Two men who had an affair with the same woman, identified as a resident of Ranale, were summoned to the said station to investigate a related complaint, upon which one person had stabbed the other man and killed him. The deceased was identified as a 52-year-old resident of the Karawanella area. The 42-year-old suspect is currently in police custody. In a separate incident, two suspects who stole garlic from a container belonging to a private company have been arrested in Peralanda by the Police. The Police said that three individuals who had come to purchase the stolen garlic were also arrested. The suspects have stolen 777 kg of garlic, which contained 33,000 kg of garlic in total after the payment of duty. The 777 kg of garlic and a sum of Rs. 734,840, which was in the possession of the three suspects, have also been seized by the Police.
