Lakvijaya power plant: Second plant begins generation

25 Aug 2020

The second plant at the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant (Lakvijaya Power Station) has commenced power generation starting last morning (24). Norochcholai Coal Power Plant Managing Engineer Indrasiri Gallage has said the second plant is now generating power and has been connected to the national grid. Accordingly, the second and third power plants at Norochcholai are now generating 600 MW, which is being fed to the national grid. The Norochcholai Coal Power Plant was shut down a week ago following an islandwide power outage that lasted for over eight hours on 17 August. The time to restart power generation of the plants caused a shortfall in the country’s power supply, resulting in the imposition of daily power cuts until last Friday (21). The report of the committee appointed by Minister of Power Dullas Alahpperuma to inquire into the island wide power outage was due to be handed over to the Minister yesterday (24).
