Lalith Weerathunga and Anusha Pelpita acquitted of charges on sil cloth court case

Former Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga and former Director General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission Anusha Pelpita were acquitted of the charges against them on the sil cloth court case.

The Court of Appeal pronounced the relevant decision today (19). The two were convicted in a sil fabric case and sentenced to three years in prison and fined and released on bail. Although the decision was scheduled to be given the day before yesterday, it was postponed to today (19) due to not informing its stakeholders.

The case was filed against Lalith Weeratunga and Anusha Pelpita by the Attorney General during the Yahapalana government, alleging that they had misused government funds by distributing Sil cloths to temples islandwide at a cost of nearly Rs. 600 million belonging to the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission during the 2015 Presidential Election.
