Litro Gas Lanka Ltd. has agreed to release to the market a 12.5 kilogramme (kg) gas cylinder for Rs. 1,493 along with its controversial new 9.18 kg premium hybrid gas cylinder at Rs. 1,395, the latter subject to product information being provided to the consumer. According to a statement released by the State Ministry of Co-operative Services, Marketing Development, and Consumer Protection, the company had agreed to release the 12.5 kg gas cylinder to the market. However, if consumers cannot obtain the regular 12.5 kg gas cylinder sold by Litro Gas Lanka Ltd. in the market, they can inform the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) by calling 1977. Litro Gas Lanka Ltd. announced the introduction of a new premium hybrid 18 litre liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder priced at Rs. 1,395 to the local market. The weight is 9.18 kg. According to the company, the new product is in a size that meets global specifications while being sufficient for a family of four to meet their cooking gas needs for a month. However, consumers claimed that they have been deceived by the latest 18 litre gas cylinder. The regular 12.5 kg gas cylinder sold by Litro Gas Lanka Ltd. is priced at Rs. 1,493. Although the product price has been reduced by about Rs. 100, consumers claimed that the weight has been reduced by three kilos. State Minister of Co-operative Services, Marketing Development, and Consumer Protection Lasantha Alagiyawanna earlier said: “On the technical aspect of this matter, we will hold discussions with Litro Gas Lanka Ltd. and take the relevant steps, if there are any changes that need to be done.” Litro Gas Lanka Ltd. had proposed to the CAA that they would withdraw 50% of its new products from the market. The company had also stated that there is no shortage of gas cylinders in the market. The Association of Self-Employed Individuals had filed a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) stating that Rs. 406 is being defrauded through the new product. However, addressing this issue, the State Ministry stated that Litro Gas Lanka Ltd. can introduce the 18 litre premium hybrid cylinder to the market under the following conditions: by informing the consumer on how effective the new product is, the price and the amount of gas, and how to identify this new product alongside the other gas products in the market.
