BY Dinitha Rathnayake    All-Ceylon Farmers’ Federation National Organiser Namal Karunaratne requested the authorities to increase the price of liquid milk due to the current situation. Speaking to The Morning, he said that the production cost has increased by 300% and that the farmers cannot bear the cost. “It’s funny to say that the price of one litre of milk, which is around Rs. 110-115, is less than the price of one litre of water. This has to be changed.” Meanwhile, he also said that milch cow breeding is also an issue due to the foreign exchange crisis and also because of the need to import nitrogen for the animals’ bedding. Older animals cannot provide milk and it is difficult to produce young cattle due to these reasons, he added. Karunaratne claimed that the Government has agreed to increase the price of a litre of liquid milk by Rs. 7, which they had earlier reduced by Rs. 20 due to company demands.  “We see that the Government only considers companies, and not the farmers who have been doing this business for a long time. They need to spend a lot of money for vitamins and minerals for milch cows, and spend Rs. 200,000 to buy a milch cow. No one is concerned about these costs,” he added.
