Mahinda Samarasinghe resigns from Parliament

25 Nov 2021

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Mahinda Samarasinghe has handed over his resignation as Member of Parliament.  He is to assume duties as Sri Lanka's Ambassador to the USA and Mexico in the 1st week of December. Earlier, Samarasinghe revealed while addressing the Parliamentary sessions that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has asked him to take office as the new Sri Lankan envoy to the US and Mexico.  “I expect to resign from Parliament within two to three days and to leave for America on 29 (November).” The Parliamentarian’s appointment comes after the retirement of Ravinatha P. Aryasinha from public service, who served as the former Sri Lankan Ambassador to the two Northern American nations.  Upon joining the Sri Lanka Foreign Service, MP Samarasinghe served as the First Secretary to the Sri Lanka High Commission in Australia and as Counsellor for the Sri Lankan Permanent Mission to the UN in Geneva in the 1980s. In addition, he has represented Sri Lanka at the International Labour Organisation, World Health Organisation, International Telecommunication Union, and the World Meteorological Organisation.
