Man found dead in train, suicide suspected

13 Jun 2022

By Buddhika Samaraweera A dead body of a male, who appears to be aged 60, was found hanging in a compartment of a train parked at the railway yard belonging to the Rambukkana Railway Station yesterday (12) morning, with the Rambukkana Police suspecting the incident to be a case of death by suicide. When contacted by The Morning, a staff member of the Rambukkana Railway Station stated that the driver’s assistant of the relevant train had first seen the body around 5 a.m. yesterday.  According to him, the said train which operates from Colombo Fort to Rambukkana leaves Colombo Fort at 7.50 p.m. and reaches Rambukkana at around 10.30 p.m. It is then parked at the Rambukkana railway yard and returned to Colombo Fort at 4.30 a.m. next day.  Following the station’s staff informing the Rambukkana Police Station regarding the incident, an investigation was launched into the matter, suspecting that the deceased had boarded the train parked at the Rambukkana railway yard on the night of 11 June before dying by suicide.  According to the Railways Department and the Police, the deceased was not in the possession of a national identity card or any other document that could prove his identity. The staff of the Rambukkana Railway Station stated that a train ticket purchased from Polgahawela to Bandarawela on 10 June was found in the shirt pocket of the deceased.  As residents of Rambukkana and its vicinity were unable to identify the deceased, the Police suspect that he may have been a resident of a remote area.  Meanwhile, when contacted by The Morning yesterday, the Police Media Division (PMD) stated that it has not been revealed whether this is a case of death by suicide or murder. The body was taken to the Kegalle Teaching Hospital as of yesterday afternoon where it was scheduled to undergo an autopsy, a PMD official said.
