Kandy Sports Club (KSC), Sri Lanka’s most celebrated and respected rugby team, announced that Mastercard – a global technology company in the payments and commerce industry – has been appointed as its Title and Payments Sponsor.
This development marks the first time that an international company will be sponsoring the team. Accordingly, Mastercard will act as the Title Sponsor of the team alongside Cargills, who has been a sponsor since 2013. Rugby is a highly followed sport in Sri Lanka, the second most popular after cricket.
“Kandy Sports Club is elated to have such a globally sought-after company sponsoring the team. We are confident that this will drive newfound confidence and visibility for the team. We are hopeful that a joint effort of this nature will uplift the team as a brand, alongside Mastercard attaining its strategic goals set out for the Sri Lankan market,” said KSC President Mahesh Weerasinghe.
“The prestige and legacy which surrounds KSC needs no introduction to Sri Lankans and acting as a Title Sponsor for the club is in line with Mastercard’s global efforts to support sports such as rugby,” said Mastercard Country Manager (Sri Lanka and the Maldives) Sandun Hapugoda.
KSC is regarded as the most successful Sri Lankan club to play in the Sri Lanka Rugby Championship, winning 22 league titles in the last 20 years. The team has also won 20 Clifford Cups from 1995 to 2012.
Club rugby season will commence in early December 2022 for the year 2022/’23. KSC will be fielding a youthful and talented team captained by former Trinitian Damith Dissanayake. Meanwhile, former Sri Lanka Rugby Captain Fazil Marija will coach KSC.
Mastercard is a proud partner as well as the preferred card of rugby competitions and programmes worldwide, including Women in Rugby and the Rugby World Cup 2021 and 2023 respectively.
