Meteorological Department issues Red Alert for heavy rain in 10 districts

The Meteorological Department yesterday (23) issued an advisory for heavy rains across the island, which set the warning level at Red Alert for 10 districts in the north-eastern parts of Sri Lanka, while the rest of the island is on Orange Alert.

It noted last evening that the prevailing low-level atmospheric disturbance located to the south-east of Sri Lanka is expected to intensify into a low-pressure area, and is likely to move west to north-westwards.

Under the influence of the low pressure area, heavy showers above 100 mm can be expected in the districts of Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Batticaloa, Ampara, Badulla, Monaragala, and Matale.

Meanwhile, fairly heavy showers above 75 mm can be expected elsewhere in the island.

The spell of inclement weather Sri Lanka has experienced this month has resulted in several deaths and caused damage to infrastructure and housing across the island. The public is therefore advised to be cautious and take measures to mitigate the risks of the expected heavy rains.
