15 Sep 2022

BY Buddhika Samaraweera   Milco (Pvt.) Ltd. has launched an investigation concerning a group of employees of the Ambewela Milco Factory who are alleged to have sold, to private filling stations, more than 45,000 litres of fuel purchased for the factory. Speaking to The Morning, Milco Chairman Renuka Perera said that he had received information about a group of employees of the Ambewela Milco Factory who have been selling fuel purchased for the factory to filling stations for some time, probably since 2021.  “I can't say the exact number of employees as of now. This has been done by a group of employees and we are currently conducting a preliminary investigation into the incident. According to the findings of the preliminary investigation, I will take necessary steps to send the relevant employees on compulsory leave,” he said.  Speaking further, he said that the investigations conducted so far have revealed that the said group of employees had sold more than 45,000 litres of fuel, particularly diesel, purchased for the operation of the generators in the factory. However, he said that the fuel has been sold in this manner before the emergence of the fuel shortage. “I have informed Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera regarding this incident, and he instructed me to carry out a comprehensive investigation to find out if this has taken place this year too. Accordingly, in the coming days, I will lodge a police complaint regarding this. In addition, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) will also conduct an investigation, as the fuel has been sold to filling stations in bowsers,” Perera said.
