Ministry of Environment to identify sensitive areas to balance cultivation and environment

01 Apr 2021

Secretary to the Ministry of Environment Dr. Anil Jasinghe stated today that a project has been launched to identify environmentally sensitive areas through GPS. He stated that the Ministry received various reports about environmental destruction due to cultivation. “We initially launched this project to identify such areas in small villages. Now we have decided to expand it throughout the island,” he stated at a media briefing held at the Ministry of Environment today entitled "Thirasara Sanwadharana Sanwadhaya". He said that following this project, the Ministry can identify degraded areas and advise the respective Divisional Secretaries. The Secretaries can then educate the farmers to cultivate in a way that would strike a balance between cultivations and the environment. Dr. Jasinghe also said that there is a long way to go in terms of environmental preservation, but the Ministry is on the right track to achieve this. “In two months, we will be able to see the results of this project. We hope that this would be a step toward reducing environmental destruction,” he concluded.
