Moo Milk is a premium pasteurised milk brand, run by Imran Noohu, that sells a variety of flavoured milk.
Talking to Noohu on how the milk for the products are sourced, he said: “We have our own dairy farm in Matale, and the milk is minimally processed ourselves from the time of collection, so that it maintains its maximum nutritional value.” He also informed us that the brand started off as a value addition to the farm, just so they could make sure that they are not simply selling milk to larger buyers.
When deciding on the flavours, they wanted to sell something that is not already available in the market. The brand has three flavours currently: Nuts for Kithul, Nutella, and Sunrise Mocha. We had the opportunity to try all three flavours out.
Nuts for Kithul
Noohu informed us that this flavour has no added sugar and is loaded with almonds, so it’s a perfect drink for someone with a sweet tooth who still wants to stay healthy and fit. He also added that it makes a great post-workout drink.
The Kithul is sourced locally from Hapugasthalawa and not commercially, and the flavour is promised to be of good quality.
If you’ve ever had a pani kaju ice cream that was melted, then you’ll know exactly what this milk tastes like. The texture of the milk was very intriguing as the almonds were finely chopped, so each sip had a mouthful of almonds. It did take a bit of getting used to, but we did really enjoy it. It wasn’t overly sweet either; with a good balance of kithul treacle and almonds, this drink was my favourite out of the three.
Nutella
The reason why they picked Nutella as a flavour is because it is not available in bottles. “Of course you can get a Nutella milkshake at a cafe, but it is not readily available to purchase,” added Noohu.
Even though this milk is not classified as a milkshake, the Nutella-flavoured milk was creamy and thick. It was clear that they hadn’t skimped on the Nutella either. The bottle required a good shake to mix up the heaps of Nutella that had collected at the bottom of the bottle.
The only downside of it was the oily film it leaves on your mouth, that comes from the hazelnut found in Nutella – but that also just goes to show that they’ve used authentic Nutella rather than a cheap knock-off. This is why they pride themselves on being a premium milk brand.
Sunrise Mocha
This was another flavour they put out due to the lack of it in the market. Noohu explained that if one were to buy a bottled mocha, the only one available is from the Starbucks franchise, which is quite expensive for a bottle of coffee.
This one was more on the bitter side, as any good coffee should be (at least, in my opinion), and as a consumer of all things coffee, I particularly enjoyed this flavour. It had a good coffee-to-milk ratio, with a nice blend of sweetness as well.
We tried all three drinks cold, and we must warn you that the milk needs to be refrigerated at all times. But on that note, if you’re in the mood for something warm, you can always heat it up and drink it. This flavour, especially, would work well hot.
When asked about their plans for the year, Noohu told us that their next immediate venture is going into pasteurised fresh milk. They are also planning on introducing another two to three flavours that have already been prepared, but Noohu is waiting for the right time to release them. So keep an eye out on their social media pages for more information!
Their products are currently available at Spar Supermarket, Keells, and small restaurants for purchase.
