Mujibur writes to Dullas on Gnanasara Thera

24 Sep 2021

BY Pamodi Waravita Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Opposition Parliamentarian Mujibur Rahuman, in a letter to Mass Media Minister Dullas Alahapperuma yesterday (23), expressed his disappointment and concern over what he claimed to be the racism that was promoted by a state media channel during an interview with Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary Ven. Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thera on 18 September. “On 18 September, Gnanasara Thera claimed that Muslims are ‘walking bombs’ and that ‘Muslim extremists can activate at any moment’. This is part of his efforts to spread suspicion, fear, and hatred between the Muslim and Sinhala communities. This was given airtime on a state media channel, four days before President Gotabaya Rajapaksa addressed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, US, and promised to commit to peaceful co-existence between communities in Sri Lanka,” claimed Rahuman. Rahuman added that the state media, which was used to spread racial tension, is meant to be used for public good, and therefore questioned as to why the country’s leaders who preach co-existence outside of the country allow the state media to promote the very opposite within the country. “You (Alahapperuma) have the responsibility to ensure that the country is not dragged into the pits of racism again,” added Rahuman further. Addressing Alahappurama, Rahuman said that as a leader, he must ensure that the country does not face more deaths due to racism again, and urged him to therefore ensure that these actions are corrected in the future.
