Nandalal slams Cabraal

Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, who had thus far refrained from commenting directly on the performance of his predecessors, yesterday (24) severely criticised former CBSL Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal. 

Speaking at the monetary policy review press conference held at the CBSL premises yesterday, Dr. Weerasinghe stated that Cabraal took office as Governor in 2021 after increasing the monthly salary he would obtain in the office from Rs. 150,000 to Rs. 400,000, an increase of over 150%, while also elevating his position to be on par with that of Cabinet Ministers.

“He took up the position after increasing his salary and raising his position to be on par with a Cabinet Minister, while paying for private secretaries, media secretaries, and other staff members of around five to six people, using taxpayer money via the Treasury,” Dr. Weerasinghe said.
