National Budget Dept.  approves new Police  recruitments for 2023

31 Oct 2022

By Buddhika Samaraweera The Ministry of Public Security stated that the National Budget Department (NBD) has approved the recruitment of a reasonable number of Police officers in the year 2023 to fill the vacancies of the Police service, and will arise due to the retirement of a large number of Police officers on 31 December 2022. Speaking to The Morning, Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security S. Hettiarachchi said: “There is a shortage of Police officers to be deployed for normal duties due to several reasons such as the existing vacancies in the Police service, retirement of a large number of Police officers by the end of this year as per the Government's decision on retirement age, and deployment of Police officers to other duties. Therefore, the Ministry is focused on recruiting officers.” During the discussions regarding the budget for the year 2023, he said that there was a discussion regarding the filling of vacancies in the Police service, and added that the NBD has approved the recruitment of a reasonable number of officers within the course of 2023. He said that it was also decided to hire about 500 officers representing the Tamil community as recommended by the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL). “The proposals in this regard have been forwarded to the relevant Cabinet Sub-Committee. In the next few weeks, the approval of the Cabinet is to be obtained for this purpose. In addition to the recruitment, the necessary arrangements for a bulk promotion of Police officers are also being carried out. It is planned under this to give relevant promotions to the officers who are currently in the ranks of Police Constable, Police Sergeant, Sub-Inspector of Police, and Inspector of Police.” added Hettiarachchi. Although the Government had initiated a programme to establish more than 200 new Police stations islandwide in 2020, The Morning reported last week that the establishment of new police stations and checkpoints has been temporarily suspended due to non-availability of necessary financial allocations, and lack of the sufficient number of Police officers. The Police, which consists of 43 Territorial Divisions, and 67 Functional Divisions, is mainly responsible for enforcing criminal and traffic law. There are 605 Police Stations with more than 84,000 officers at present. As the country is seeing a considerable increase in crimes in the recent past, many parties are emphasising that the Police and other relevant agencies should work to prevent such crimes and enforce the law against perpetrators.
