  • Squadron from Russian Navy’s Pacific Fleet resupplies at Colombo
Two Russian Kilo Class attack submarines and the Corvette “Gremyashchiy” from the Russian Pacific Fleet arrived in Colombo yesterday (16) for a two-day replenishment stop. The crew of the submarines, B-603 and B-274, and the Gremyashchiy are expected to venture into Colombo on a brief sightseeing tour today (17), the Sri Lanka Navy said. The Commanding Officer of the visiting squadron is also expected to meet the Commander Western Naval Area. According to the Navy, Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne visited the vessels in Colombo Port last afternoon. Sri Lanka has been a key destination for a number of naval visits by foreign warships since 2009. The Russian squadron’s visit comes in the wake of a visit by two Japanese warships earlier this month. A German naval vessel is also expected to call on the Colombo Port next month after a lapse of many years.
