15 Mar 2021

Chairman of the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) S. Amarasinghe today said that there are no construction projects especially for hotels, within the Sinharaja Rainforest Reserve. Speaking at a news briefing organised by the Media Centre for National Development, Mr. Amarasinghe said the government is committed to upholding the integrity and wholeness of the Sinharaja. "Nothing has happened to Sinharaja forest. There are no projects inside the Reserve. In fact, plans are being made to expand the buffer zone of the Reserve. The wildlife and survey department's officials are making arrangements to expand the size the Reserve," he said. Meanwhile, he said President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was sensitive about the environment and added that this was evident from his action taken as the Urban Development Ministry Secretary and as the presidential candidate to preserve the nature. Meanwhile, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said although the main duty of the Sri Lanka Police is to uphold the law and order, the police also remain vigilant in the protection of the environment and natural resources. "To date this year, 30 major complaints of deforestation and over 1,800 minor complaints have been dealt with," DIG Rohana said. He urged the public to restrict complaints to legitimate ones, not based off hearsay or conjecture to better utilise Police resources.
