  • State Minister Siyambalapitiya hopeful of skilled youth replacing retirees
BY Kiara Warnasuriya  State Minister of Finance Ranjith Siyambalapitiya stated yesterday (7) in a media briefing that due to the prevailing situation in the country and as per Ministry Circulars, State Departments are not ready to hire new employees. “We are in no position to hire new employees in view of the country’s situation,” he stated. He further stated that many departments under the Ministry of Finance already have large numbers of vacancies.  “As of now, there are 773 vacancies in the Sri Lanka Customs Department, 434 vacancies in the Inland Revenue Department (IRD), and 332 vacancies in the Excise Department,” said Siyambalapitiya, noting that these departments are facing severe difficulties due to the large number of vacancies. Siyambalapitiya also pointed out that many State employees are due to retire at the end of the year in view of the retirement age being revised to 60 years by the Government. He noted that the Ministry therefore aims to give the opportunity of facing this challenge to the existing employees of these departments, and would soon allow skilled individuals among the youth to seek employment in these State Departments.
