No risk of non-payment of July salaries

14 Jul 2022

BY Buddhika Samaraweera Against the backdrop of reports to the effect that it would not be possible to pay the public servants` salaries for the month of July due to the current economic and political situation, Government sources stated there is no risk of such a situation arising. A high ranking official of a Ministry related to the payment of salaries to public servants, speaking to The Morning, mentioned that the money needed to pay the salaries of the public servants of the respective institutions is usually credited to the accounts of the relevant institutions from the general Treasury, through the Ministry of Finance. “In general, if there is a risk of such a situation arising, the Ministry should inform the relevant institutions about it in advance. However, no such notification has been made so far. There is currently no problem regarding the payment of salaries to the employees of the institutions under this Ministry’s command. Therefore, my opinion is that there will be no situation where the public servants would not be able to be paid,” he said. It was recently reported that due to the current economic and political crisis situation in the country, it will not be possible to pay the salaries of public servants this month. The reports stated that without printing money, it is not possible to procure the money needed to pay salaries. It was also reported that the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers is required for printing money, but it is uncertain as to whether such an approval would be able to be obtained given the current political crisis.
