Norochcholai second plant commences generation

The second plant at the Norochcholai coal power plant has commenced power generation from this morning (24).

Managing Engineer of the plant, Indrasiri Gallage has said the second plant is now generating power and has been connected to the national grid.

Accordingly, the second and third power plants at Norochcholai are now generating 600MW of that is being fed to the national grid.

The Nororchcholai power plant was shut down a week ago following an island wide power outage that lasted for over eight hours last Monday (17).

The time to restart power generation of the plants caused a shortfall in the country’s power supply resulting in the imposing of daily power cuts until last Friday (21).

The report of the committee appointed by Power Minister Dullas Alahpperuma to inquire into the island wide power outage is due to be handed over to the Minister today (24).
