NTJ ban gazette this week

12 May 2019

By Skandha Gunasekara The gazette notification banning extremist groups, such as the National Thawheed Jamath, would be issued this week. State Minister of Defense Ruwan Wijewardana said the gazette notification was being handled by the Presidential Secretariat. He went on to say that the delay thus far in having the gazette notification printed was because the authorities were waiting for the security establishment to announce if there were any other groups to be added to the list. “We are waiting on the security forces and intelligence units to inform us whether there are any more extremists groups that need to be added to the list of banned groups,” the Minister said. He said that he expects this issue to be finalised soon and the gazette to be issued this coming week. Soon after the Easter Sunday terror attacks, President Maithripala Sirisena said he would ban the National Thawheed Jamath (NTJ) and Jammiyathul Millathu Ibrahim (JMI) under emergency regulations.
