  • Octane 95 not imported in last 5 months: Minister
The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) plans to import a consignment of octane 95 petrol by the end of the month as existing stocks are dwindling, it is learnt. Last week, Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera tweeted that octane 95 petrol had not been imported in the last five months by the CPC and that the current price at the pump did not reflect the current costs. Responding to a question, CPC Managing Director Susantha Silva confirmed to The Sunday Morning that stocks of octane 95 petrol were dwindling and that a new consignment would be ordered this month. “We have to import it and we plan to import it by the end of the month. The Sapugaskanda Refinery cannot produce octane 95 petrol so we need to import it. The octane 95 stocks at hand are low,” Silva told The Sunday Morning, adding that the current supply to the market was being rationed. According to Silva, the dollar constraints scuttled planned shipments of octane 95 in August and September, forcing the CPC to ration supply. A senior Energy Ministry official told The Sunday Morning that supply had been limited to around 300 MT of octane 95 per day. Many motorists who have Euro level 4 and similar engine vehicles require octane 95 or super diesel to function effectively. Silva also told The Sunday Morning that the CPC had adequate stocks of super diesel until December. – By Asiri Fernando
