The future is virtual. Opinions may vary, of course, but for the most part, this is true. Many companies in the US have reported employees are choosing to quit rather than returning to working physically. And if our work has transformed to become so vastly virtual over the last one-and-a-half years, then how we entertain ourselves has seen an even bigger transformation.
Online gaming was a booming business before the pandemic. Minecraft, Call of Duty, and League of Legends are just some of the world’s most popular online games that have made a mark even among Sri Lanka’s online gaming community. Online gaming has become such a valid form of gaming and play that there are even esports championships.
Sri Lanka has a thriving online gaming community, and on 16 July, interactive media, game development, and movie production company Prodigi Interactive and their partner company Gameroar Technologies will host One Big Leap, a global virtual fan experience that gives gaming project fans and casual esports lovers access to the entirety of the Prodigi and GameRoar projects in the MetaVerse, from South Asia’s most ambitious and epic AAA game project to the launch of the largest casual esports gaming platform and its adjacent upcoming animation movies, video games, and of course, comics.
Taking place in two segments, One Big Leap will go live at 8 p.m. on 16 July with an exclusive look at Prodigi Interactive’s blockbuster online gaming project Threta Revelations, followed by the worldwide release of its trailer, as well as presentations and a panel discussion with the game development team.
The second segment of One Big Leap is the soft launch of Gameroar Technologies’ mobile gaming platform Megaplay with Dialog Axiata. Megaplay boasts Sri Lanka’s first and only casual esports catalogue of games exclusively for Dialog users. The games in the Megaplay catalogue are hyper localised games designed to capture fun hot topics in Sri Lanka. Megaplay’s partnership with Sri Lanka’s largest telco, Dialog Axiata, and its features and gaming ecosystem are aimed to empower developers and casual esports fans through creating a platform where both players and designers can experience the potential of Sri Lankan online gaming.
One Big Leap will also release key information about Prodigi-based content, including the Prodigi Legends Extended Universe Gaming franchise, the Threta Metaverse Gaming franchise, the Saladin Project, Dashnan comic books, and videogames.
Prodigy Interactive CEO Yasith Sirisena shared that One Big Leap was created initially as a virtual entertainment and special announcement event to be conducted yearly. “Tech companies like Apple, Tesla, and so on all have bigger picture visions. The One Big Leap concept and name was initially generated by man going to the moon, and how that was a huge leap forward for humanity. That’s the same concept we took when creating One Big Leap, because we as Sri Lankans, are going to be taking a big leap by taking these products to the international world.”
With the virtual world taking hold more and more each day, boundaries blurring, and the world becoming closer as a whole, Sirisena shared that going online and becoming a part of an online community has been made that much easier because of the pandemic. “Technology has developed, internet speeds have gone up, services have improved,” Sirisena said, adding: “Most people staying home under stress started playing online games. The pandemic situation has pushed for more things to get done and the gaming world has improved. Infrastructure is better, servers are better; everything has gone that way, becoming bigger and better. The One Big Leap event is very futuristic and is the first time a tech product is being launched like this in Sri Lanka, which is very exciting. It’s the first time we are able to showcase products in the way companies like Apple would.”
One Big Leap takes place on 16 July at 8 p.m. and will premiere through Prodigi Interactive’s Threta Revelations YouTube page Threta Game. For more information on the One Big Leap event, you may also visit the One Big Leap By Prodigi Interactive Facebook event page.
