One down and one to go, says MJ

  • This is the end of the Rajapaksas: Jayasuriya
In one of the darkest hours in Sri Lankan history, when political goons attacked peaceful and young protesters in Colombo on Monday (9), the country turned back to violence, in a manner similar to what the country had experienced many decades ago – violence, killing, torching, and destruction of property of civilians and politicians. Amidst the mayhem, Prime Minister (PM) Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned on Monday afternoon which sparked Twitter messages from leading cricket legends of the country. About two hours after the PM’s resignation, Mahela Jayawardene, currently working as the Head Coach of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Mumbai Indians, Tweeted: “One down and one to GO!!!!” The Tweet implied that only President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is remaining to leave his position following his brother Mahinda. Kumar Sangakkara, who is also currently busy with the IPL working as Director of Cricket of the franchise Rajasthan Royals, had replied to Prime Minister Rajapaksa’s Tweet that was posted after the pandemonium, and before his resignation, at the Galle Face promenade on Monday. Rajapaksa had said: “While emotions are running high in Sri Lanka, I urge our general public to exercise restraint and remember that violence only begets violence. The economic crisis we’re in needs an economic solution which this administration is committed to resolving.” Sangakkara had replied to the above Tweet saying: “The only violence was perpetrated by your ‘supporters’ – goons and thugs who came to your office first before going to assault the peaceful protestors.” Another former Sri Lanka Captain Sanath Jayasuriya, in his reply to outgoing Premier’s above Tweet, said: “I never thought that this type of thuggery would be unleashed on innocent protesters at Galle Face in broad daylight and outside Temple Trees. The police must remember they are here to protect the PUBLIC of this country, not corrupt politicians. This is the end of the Rajapaksas.”
