Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Harsha De Silva today requested the government to only distribute oil products that have the SLS certification.
“With the recent crisis of imported unrefined oil containing aflatoxins, we have learnt that the government is importing and distributing certain products that might be unhealthy to the citizens. We urge the government to take action against those responsible for this,” he stated.
He also said that it was found that the unrefined oil has proved to be more toxic for children and is cancerous even if it is consumed in small amounts.
“Every household in this country uses oil every day. This means that several citizens might already be affected by such products,” he said.
MP De Silva also stated that the primary step that needed to be established is traceability to ensure that unrefined oil does not get imported into the country again. He said that random quality testing should also be done.
“This is only the tip of the iceberg. We have only caught 13 containers of oil. There might be other containers that have already distributed unrefined oil throughout the country. The way we can prevent this is if the government stops importing oil in bulks and whatever is imported should be tested by the SLS and given the relevant certification,” he stated.
