Over 300,000 AstraZeneca doses available in SL: Lalith Weerathunga

Senior Advisor to President Lalith Weerathunga said 356,000 doses of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine are presently available in Sri Lanka.

He stated that they will be used to provide the second dose to those who were already vaccinated under the first phase of vaccine rollout.

Further, it was revealed at a media briefing held today that the government is implementing steps to import AstraZeneca vaccines manufactured in other countries in addition to India.

“New research suggests that the second dose of the vaccine has more efficacy between 12 weeks to 16 weeks. Accordingly the date has been set to May for the rollout of the second dose,” he said.

Weerathunga also said that over 90,000 Covid-19 vaccine doses would expire by June and therefore need to be utilized before the date of expiration.

Further, it was revealed that a consignment of 200,000 doses of Sputnik vaccines would be received in Sri Lanka by the end of April.
