The CMC informed that those between the ages of 59 and 66-years could receive the vaccine as the second dose. A short message service (SMS) text message containing details about the second dose, would be sent to the number they had provided at the time of receiving the first dose, it added.

The Epidemiology Unit reports that 540,948 people are still awaiting the second dose of the AstraZeneca Covishield vaccine which was administered at the beginning of the year.

A total of 26,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine arrived in the country this week, while another 52,000 doses are expected within the month. The Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals State Ministry Secretary Dr. Saman Rathnayake said that Sri Lanka has ordered five million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine which are expected to arrive in batches throughout the year.

The National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) approved the Pfizer-BioNTech anti Covid-19 vaccine for emergency use in the country on 7 May. Reportedly, the five million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine would be funded by the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
