  • Responds to allegations by former TVMP member who fled SL seeking asylum
By Dinitha Rathnayake   Thamil Makkal Viduthalaip Puligal (TMVP) Leader Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias “Pillayan” has denied allegations that he was involved in several kidnappings and murders, including the murders of Tamil MPs Joseph Pararajasingham and Nadarajah Raviraj, as well as the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda, as claimed by a former TVMP member who had fled the country, and said this was a planned activity by Tamil politicians who oppose him. Speaking to The Morning, he said the allegations are baseless. “This is only because I’m a former member of the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam). Every now and then, I’ve been attacked by Tamil politicians. Anyone can leave Sri Lanka and seek asylum by making false allegations,” Chandrakanthan said. It is reported that an informant of the TMVP, the breakaway faction of the LTTE, had made these revelations to the United Nations (UN) in Geneva.  The informant had revealed sensitive information related to the Easter Sunday attacks and a number of murders and enforced disappearances. He had written to some key diplomatic missions in Colombo and overseas, giving brief details of the information in his possession. He had then fled the country recently and sought refuge overseas, fearing for his life. However, Chandrakanthan pointed out that he had no connection with the Easter attacks, and was in prison during that time. “The Easter attack was planned by Muslim terrorists and not by me. How am I supposed to carry out an attack while I’m in jail?” he questioned. Chandrakanthan was interrogated by the Police over his suspected involvement in the assassinations of Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MPs Joseph Pararajasingham and Nadarajah Raviraj in December 2005 and November 2006, respectively. Chandrakanthan made history in 2008 as the first elected Chief Minister of the Eastern Province. He also contested in the August 2015 Parliamentary poll, through the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA), but lost.
