PM appoints committee to probe demolition of a 13th Century building in Kurunegala

17 Jul 2020

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has appointed an expert committee to investigate into the demolition of 13th Century building in Kurunegala. A 13th Century Kings Court of King Bhuvanaikabahu II was torn down on Thursday by the Kurunegala City’s mayor hours before the Department of Archaeology was to conduct an excavation and restoration on the site. The Department of Archaeology had reportedly informed the Police that there was a danger that the portion of the building could be bulldozed. The Kurunegala Mayor has however noted that the demolition was carried out with the permission of the Road Development Authority (RDA) for the purpose of widening a road running through the area.
