PM calls for a female MP to be proposed as Deputy Speaker

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has strongly urged for Sri Lanka’s Members of Parliament (MPs) to propose the name of a female MP to be appointed as Deputy Speaker of Parliament, The Morning learns.

Speaking to The Morning, the Prime Minister’s Media Division said that this is because the PM believes that women do not have adequate Parliamentary representation.

Wickremesinghe had also requested for discussions to be held first among MPs so that a single candidate can be proposed as a unanimous choice to fill the role of Deputy Speaker.
