PM used Amarakeethi’s condolence day for his own political agenda: Shanakiyan

10 Jun 2022

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has been the Prime Minister 6 times in the past and yet he used the condolence motion day for the late MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala for his own political agenda, says Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam. He made this statement while speaking to The Morning today (10). "The Prime Minister knows the parliamentary law, he has been elected as Prime Minister in the past as well. He made allegations for his own political agenda and to stir up the minds of the people. This was uncalled for, especially on a day with emotions running high. He brought this forward obviously for his own political agenda, and this is very clear for all to see," said Rasamanickam. Earlier today, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, while speaking in parliament, demanded for an inquiry on statements made by MP Rasamanickam in a speech previously made in which Wickremesinghe stated that Rasamanickam condoned the violence that took place on the 9th of May. “The MP said houses were torched due to MPs voting in favour of the 20th Amendment and other policies that were against the country. He also urged all to keep in mind that their houses were attacked for betraying the people,” Wickremesinghe read out, quoting Rasamanickam's speech. Wickremesinghe further stated that MP Rasamanickam must apologise for the statement made before the conclusion of the next parliament sitting.
