29 Apr 2022

Further to an incident where a protester was allegedly assaulted by a police officer while protesting in front of Temple Trees this morning (29), Police Spokesperson SSP (Attorney at Law) Nihal Thalduwa said that police officers did not assault the protester in front of Temple Trees, but instead were acting in self defence as the protester was not allowing the Police officer to remove flyers stuck on police vehicles. He made this statement while speaking to The Morning today (29). "Protestors had stuck flyers on the shutters of the police vehicles the previous night. When the 4 police officers had arrived to clean and remove the flyers off the shutters, 4 protesters arrived and were not allowing the police officers to remove the flyers. It was then that there was a small physical altercation and the protester and his friends had called an ambulance and he now claims that the police had assaulted him," said Thalduwa. He further added that according to the statement by the accused police officer, the police had only wanted to remove the flyers from the police vehicles and it was a form of self defence when the protesters had first started the argument.
