Police officer who foiled Thambuttegama robbery promoted

Police Sergeant B.A. Buddhika Kumara, who apprehended two bank robbers at Thambuttegama, was promoted to the rank of Sub-Inspector (SI) of Police, according to the Police Headquarters. Accordingly, the Police Headquarters stated that he was promoted with the approval of the Public Service Commission. Moreover, he has been awarded with the medal of “Police Valour” and a monetary reward of Rs. 2.5 million on behalf of the Sri Lanka Police. The said incident occurred at around 2 p.m. last Monday (26 September), when a businessman from the Thambuttegama economic centre who was carrying approximately Rs. 22.3 million in cash, to be deposited at a private bank in Thambuttegama, was attacked by the two suspects. However, as the duo were attempting to escape with the stolen cash, the police officer who was on duty nearby had proceeded to act swiftly and intercept the suspects, subsequently apprehending them.
