The Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF), led by Ahila Ilankai Thamil Congress Parliamentarian Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam, said yesterday (4) that they condemn the decision to involve government representatives in the historic Jaffna Kite Festival.
In a media statement, the TNPF said that they condemn the decision taken to invite government representatives and officials to the Jaffna Kite Festival as they claim that it is this same Government that is contributing to the erasure of Tamil culture and history. The TNPF has noted that this is a move to “destroy the Tamil tradition”.
Media reports show that the Ministry of Youth and Sports has partnered with the Jaffna Kite Festival this year, following a Tweet by Youth and Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa on 29 December 2021.
“The Ministry is proud to partner with the Jaffna Kite Festival in order to expand it into an international event as we look to invite global media and diplomatic partners to witness the event this year. Looking forward to some spectacular talent,” the Tweet stated.
The kite festival in Jaffna is an annual event, held in concurrence with the Thai Pongal festival every January. Hundreds of participants are usually seen at the event.
