Post of deputy speaker: SJB proposes Kavirathna

By Asiri Fernando The main Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) yesterday (14) stated that the Opposition would nominate Matale District MP Rohini Wijeratne Kavirathna for the vacant position of deputy speaker when Parliament resumes sittings this week. Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa took to Twitter last evening to announce the decision, calling Kavirathna a strong activist of women’s and children’s rights. “@RWKavirathna, a strong activist of women’s and children’s rights, will be our nominee for the post of deputy speaker,” Premadasa tweeted. Responding to a question, SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara stated that the party had discussed multiple names, including that of MP Imthiaz Bakeer Markar, another leading candidate for the role of deputy speaker. The Sri Lanka Podujana Party (SLPP) is in discussions to propose Hambantota District MP Ajith Rajapakse, SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam told The Sunday Morning Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara said that the party had not discussed whether it would nominate a member to the post.   The deputy speaker post became vacant after much drama in the house with former Deputy Speaker Ranjith Siyambalapitiya resigning for the second time after being re-elected following his initial resignation.
