Post-UNHRC: SL to focus on local initiatives

04 Apr 2021

  • Govt. to explain the countries situation at international level

  • “Moves to win hearts of North”

The Government will focus on implementing the initiatives taken by Sri Lanka such as the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) and the Paranagama Commission on abductions and disappearances, Co-Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said.   “Also, in parallel, action will be taken to win the hearts and minds of the people of the Northern Province and to take necessary measures to ensure that they feel as if they are part of one country. Action will be taken continuously in this regard and there is more to be done as well,” he told The Sunday Morning.   As a long-term measure, he said that the Government will yet again take steps to explain the true facts about the situation in Sri Lanka to other countries.   “We will explain the situation in the country at the international level, to win their co-operation. The main hurdle in this is the European Union voting bloc. They have highlighted matters related to human rights but there are no recent human rights violations. They have reported some incidents, blowing them out of proportion. Further, they are not based on accurate facts. Therefore, we actually don’t have to worry about these things,” he said.
