Power crisis: Norochcholai in full force from tomorrow

22 May 2022

  • Planned maintenance to continue
Repairs of one generation unit at the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant will be completed this weekend, Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera said yesterday (21). According to Wijesekera, once online, the generation unit will add 275 Megawatts (MWs) of electricity to the national grid. He said that since the unit was powered by coal, no fuel would need to be allocated for the generation of 275 MWs. However, the Minister said that some segments of the Norochcholai Power Plant (consisting of three generation units in total) would have to be subjected to planned maintenance in the coming months.  Wijesekera did not give a timeframe on the Norochcholai unit or units that may be ‘offline’ and also did not disclose how the Ceylon Electricity Board planned to plug the gap in power generation.
