Power cut-free Mirihana sees rents increase

25 Feb 2022

Mirihana has been exempted from the ongoing power interruptions experienced around the island and the rent charged by landlords in the Mirihana area has also increased due to the 24-hour availability of electricity, The Morning reliably learnt. Sources living in the area told The Morning on condition of anonymity that they have experienced no power cuts and also confirmed the increasing of the monthly rentals charged by landlords and landladies. The private residence of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is situated in Mirihana. When queried about exempting towns such as Mirihana from power cuts, Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) United Trade Union Alliance Convener Ranjan Jayalal said that there could be various reasons affecting such a decision, such as the fact that it has high-profile residents. Meanwhile, speaking in Parliament yesterday (24), acting Power Minister and incumbent Solar Power, Wind and Hydro Power Generation Projects Development State Minister Duminda Dissanayake said that an uninterrupted power supply has been granted to the Board of Investment (BOI) industrial zones. Jayalal also said that certain sites at free trade zones (FTZs) were exempted from power cuts, considering the nature of the work. “Electricity is essential for some factories at FTZs related to rubber and iron manufacturing, so these were exempted from power cuts.” Attempts to contact the CEB Chairman in this regard proved futile. Power Ministry Secretary Wasantha Perera said that the supply of electricity will not be disrupted for hospitals, water purification plants, high security zones (HSZs), and locations identified as crucial for national security.
