  • Exploring possibilities to hold practicals
  • 622,000 students await 2020 O/L results
By Yoshitha Perera The practical exams for GCE Ordinary Level (O/L) and Advanced Level (A/L) candidates will be held as planned, The Sunday Morning learnt. According to the Ministry of Education, there is no plan to postpone the practical exams, and it would be held soon after the country returns to normal. This is despite warnings that the ongoing trade union action by teachers and principals may be prolonged further, after the Government and the unions failed to reach a consensus last week. Speaking to The Sunday Morning, Ministry of Education Secretary Prof. Kapila Perera said that, although there is ongoing strike action by the trade unions, the Ministry is exploring possibilities to conduct the GCE O/L and A/L practical exams according to plan. “As soon as the country returns to normal, we would have the practical exams in 1,500 examination centres,” Prof. Perera said. Due to the quarantine curfew currently in force, the practical exams for 169,000 O/L students who sat for aesthetic subjects have been postponed until the country returns to normal, Prof. Perera explained. Earlier, the exams for the O/L practical subjects were scheduled to be held from 28 August to 8 September. Moreover, due to the inability to conduct the practical exams for aesthetic subjects, the release of exam results of the 622,000 students who sat for the GCE O/L exam in 2020 has been delayed.
