17 May 2022

BY Dinitha Rathnayake  Urban Development and Housing Minister and Chief Government Whip Prasanna Ranatunga stated that he will personally intervene to bring justice to all those whose properties, including houses, were damaged due to the violence that took place in the country on various occasions since 31 March. He pointed out that he has already discussed the matter with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. Protests and violence against members of the Government began with public protests outside President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s Mirihana residence on 31 March. Since that incident, there have been several incidents of arson and the destruction of properties, including houses, targeting former Ministers, MPs, local government councillors and members, and supporters of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna in various parts of the country. A special programme is being implemented to obtain all the relevant information in connection with these attacks, Ranatunga said. Ranatunga further stated that an expeditious programme will be implemented to bring those responsible to justice.
